Home Automation is both an art and a science to combine many disciplines to create a system that will allow your home to anticipate and effortlessly serve your needs. Home Automation is a term that describes the integration of the various sub-systems in your home, such as: lighting control, climate control, security and cameras, pool and spa controls, shade controls, and even audio/video, to some extent. Events in your home can be automated to occur together, either triggered from the home-owner pressing a button on a control panel, or even triggered at specific times of day, or even at certain times of the year.

The most common example of Home Automation is Lighting Control. By using light switches that can communicate with each other, lighting scenes can be created for a single room, or even across your entire home. An "Entertain" button on a control panel can set up all of the lighting in your home the way you would when you are expecting guests. If your lighting control system is communicating with your security system, coming home and disarming the security system can also light a pathway into the Kitchen for you. Or, if your hot tub controls are communicating with the system, turning on the lights by the hot tub can also get the water jets and bubbles started for you.

Another common subsystem to be automated in your home is the climate control, or HVAC system. By using special thermostats that can communicate with each other, house-wide cooling and heating setpoints can be adjusted from a single location. Or, when tied in with the security system, opening the windows in your bedroom on a nice Spring day can automatically shut off the climate control for that area only, then automatically turn it back on when the windows are closed.
